Within the programs of Scouting America, there are many opportunities for young people to grow—but few are as impactful and transformative as the Order of the Arrow. Often described as Scouting’s National Honor Society, the Order of the Arrow (OA) goes far beyond recognition. It is a powerful leadership development experience rooted in service, character, and brotherhood. As we get ready to start our election process, I wanted to take a few minutes to share what the Order of the Arrow is, what it means, and what it can be for the Scouts who choose to engage in the amazing opportunities that it provides beyond traditional Scouting.
A Purpose Greater Than Recognition
At its core, the Order of the Arrow exists to recognize those Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. But recognition is just the beginning. Membership in the OA is an invitation—an invitation to lead, to serve, and to grow.
Through induction into the OA, young people are challenged to reflect on their commitment to others and to embrace a deeper sense of purpose. This foundation creates a mindset that leadership is not about authority, but about service.
More Than an Honor—A Call to Lead
Being elected into the Order of the Arrow by fellow Scouts is one of the highest recognitions a young person can receive in Scouting. But within Indian Waters Council, it is not simply an award—it is a call to action.
OA members are expected to step forward, take initiative, and model what it means to live the Scout Oath and Law every day. This mindset helps transform recognition into responsibility.
Leadership Through Action
One of the greatest strengths of the Order of the Arrow is its youth-led structure. From chapter meetings to lodge leadership, young members are given real responsibility and the opportunity to lead their peers. Our lodge provides real leadership opportunities for Scouts to plan events, lead committees, and make decisions that directly impact the program.
Unlike many environments where leadership is simulated or directed by adults, the OA empowers youth to:
Plan and execute events
Lead service projects
Manage teams and committees
Solve real-world challenges
This hands-on leadership experience builds confidence, decision-making ability, and accountability—skills that carry far beyond Scouting into school, careers, and life.
Whether organizing fellowship weekends, supporting unit elections, or coordinating service efforts, OA members develop:
Confidence in leading peers
Strong communication and teamwork skills
The ability to plan and execute meaningful programs
These aren’t theoretical lessons—they are real experiences that prepare young people for leadership roles in school, careers, and life.
A Commitment to Service
Service is the backbone of the Order of the Arrow. Whether supporting council camps, leading conservation efforts, or assisting at community events, OA members dedicate countless hours to improving the world around them.
These experiences teach young people:
The value of giving back without expecting recognition
The importance of teamwork and shared responsibility
How small efforts can create meaningful impact
In a world often focused on individual achievement, the OA reinforces the importance of selfless service.
Brotherhood That Lasts a Lifetime
Another defining element of the Order of the Arrow is its strong sense of brotherhood. Through shared experiences—especially the induction process and service projects—members form deep, lasting connections.
This brotherhood creates:
A supportive network of peers and mentors
A sense of belonging and purpose
Opportunities to collaborate and grow together
Strengthens the overall Scouting program
Encourages collaboration between units
Provides a network of support and mentorship
These relationships often extend well beyond Scouting, shaping personal and professional networks for years to come.
Living the Values of the OA
The Order of the Arrow is guided by principles that are simple, yet powerful: brotherhood, cheerfulness, and service. These values are not just words—they are expectations that members strive to live out every day.
By embracing these ideals, young people develop:
Strong character and integrity
A positive attitude, even in challenging situations
A lifelong commitment to helping others
Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders—Today
The Order of the Arrow in Indian Waters Council is not just about what Scouts do today—it’s about who they become tomorrow. The leadership skills, service mindset, and strong values developed through the OA prepare young people to succeed in any path they choose.
From leading their peers to serving their communities, OA members carry these lessons forward, making a lasting impact wherever they go.
The Order of the Arrow provides a unique environment where young people can develop these qualities in a meaningful and lasting way. It challenges them to step up, take responsibility, and make a difference—not because they have to, but because they want to.
Final Thoughts
The value of the Order of the Arrow lies not just in what it represents, but in what it creates: leaders of character who are committed to service and grounded in strong values. In the Indian Waters Council, the Order of the Arrow stands as a powerful force for good.
For those who are elected, it is more than an honor. It is a journey. A journey that shapes young people into capable leaders, dedicated servants, and individuals who are prepared to make a positive impact wherever life takes them. A journey that provides an opportunity to grow, to lead, and to give back in meaningful ways.
And for our council, it is one of the greatest tools we have to prepare young people to become the leaders our communities need.
